CAMP SPOTLIGHT: Open Window School | 2024 SUMMER CAMPS

By Snoqualmie Valley-Issaquah-Sammamish Macaroni KID March 3, 2024

The Open Window Summer Program welcomes all kids entering kindergarten through 7th grades and offers Teaching Assistant opportunities to 8th through 12th graders. Week-long classes provide engaging experiences designed to encourage creative and critical thinking, experimentation, and discovery.

We can’t wait to welcome you to Open Window School this summer! This summer we are offering 5 weeks of programs between July 1 and August 2 for campers entering Kindergarten through 7th Grade. Located on Cougar Mountain we offer both specialty classes and themed camps. We also offer a Teacher Assistant Program for students entering 8th-12th grade.

During our summer program, friendly, experienced teachers lead activities full of hands-on projects including art, technology, sports, science, nature, crafts, and more! By offering 3-4 specialty classes each week, campers have the option to mix and match classes to create the ideal camp experience tailored for them. Run by our school-year faculty and staff, partners who offer After School classes at Open Window during the school year, and professional visiting artists, our staff are passionate about the subjects they teach and have designed their curriculum specifically for the ages they will be working with.

We offer a wide range of specialty topics including chess, parkour, drama, African dance and drumming, programming, robotics, and much more. Each Specialty Class will share what they have been doing together with a culminating event or project on the final day of the week.

For those campers entering grades Kindergarten through 4th grade who want to try their hand at lots of different activities, our themed camps allow them to explore a theme throughout the week, such as learning magic tricks, taking part in the Olympics, or exploring the world! Activities will be hands-on, engaging, and fun, and will touch upon lots of different subject areas – including crafts, sports, and music to name a few! Our Theme Camp Director and Assistant Director (current Open Window Teachers) develop the curriculum in collaboration with Theme Camp Lead Teachers, who then work closely with our Counselors to facilitate the curriculum.

For students entering Grades 8-12 the Open Window Summer Teacher Assistant (TA) Program is designed to offer them a comprehensive classroom experience as a mentor to students and an assistant to teachers. TAs are campers with leadership responsibilities and can have a profound impact on a student’s experience. Under the guidance of the Summer Program Assistant Director and classroom teachers, TAs will attend training sessions, learn how to be an effective TA, model positive classroom behavior, undergo classroom observation and performance evaluations, participate in self-evaluations, and provide general camp support as needed. Upon successful completion of the program, TA hours will be validated as volunteer hours to meet school requirements.

One of the greatest benefits of our summer program is the ability for campers to socialize and meet new people. During an extended break like summer, kids often find it difficult to form or maintain friendships with peers their age. It has been found that outside of their siblings or cousins, most kids mainly interact with adults when they are not in school. Not only do campers develop important life skills through socializing – such as sharing, setting boundaries, and problem-solving – they are also learning how to develop strong, healthy relationships through interacting with their peers.

Each of our programs incorporates aspects of learning, exploring, character-building, and personal growth. You can be certain that your child will not only be entertained, but also educated, and challenged during their time with us. While they are having fun and exploring their interests, they are also increasing their own capacities for learning, teamwork, problem-solving, knowledge, and self-awareness.

Come join us this summer.  It’s going to be a lot of fun!
